How well did the betting business go at the Olympic Games?

Just a few weeks ago, an important sporting event for bookmakers ended with the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. At Casinova.org, we reported, among other things, that up to one billion euros in bets were forecast during the European Football Championship alone. However, the Summer Olympics, which ended on August 11, are equally important for the bookmakers’ balance sheets, at least in France.

France: Players wagered around 360 million euros during the Olympic Games

The Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) stated that players in France alone wagered around 360 million euros on the competitions. Compared to the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, this would be an increase of around three times.

Less surprising is the fact that football and tennis are also among the most popular sports among betting fans at the Olympic Games. In addition, handball, rugby, basketball and swimming were also very popular thanks to the successful athletes from France.

Sports betting providers did indeed turn over around 360 million euros during the Olympic Games in France. However, this amount is small compared to the European Football Championship in Germany. As mentioned above, betting turnover of one billion euros was forecast in Germany for the European Football Championship. In France, 650 million euros were turned over during the football tournament, almost twice as much as during the Summer Olympics in Paris.

A total of 206 countries with over 11,000 athletes took part in the Olympic Games in Paris. The United States was in first place in the medal table with 126 medals (including 40 gold). China (91 medals, including 40 gold) and Japan (45 medals, including 20 gold) followed in second and third place. Germany came in tenth place with 12 gold medals and a total of 33 medals.

French people placed 5.5 million euros on betting on swimming alone

According to the French gaming authority, the fact that a total of 5.5 million euros was wagered on sports on swimming is particularly impressive. That is more than six times as much as at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The gaming authority in France also assumes that the betting volume worldwide at the Summer Olympics was around 9 billion euros. Unfortunately, there were no exact betting turnovers specifically for Germany that were generated during the Olympic Games.
