In recent years, we at Casinova.org have reported several times about artificial intelligence in the context of the gambling industry. For example, an article published in December 2020 discussed how AI can increase risk-taking when gambling. However, AI is now also being used more frequently to gain unfair advantages in online casinos. The misuse of AI could therefore endanger the integrity of the entire online gambling industry.
How does artificial intelligence endanger online casinos?
The two biggest sources of danger for online casino operators currently include automated bots and so-called prediction algorithms. The advantage of bots is that human behavior can be imitated without the typical restrictions that come with it. As a result, the automated bots can play non-stop, quickly recognize patterns and then exploit the weaknesses of the respective software. This gives users an unfair advantage compared to the classic human player. This advantage is particularly evident in roulette.
With prediction algorithms, extremely large amounts of data from the past are analyzed in order to be able to recognize trends or patterns. This AI-supported form of fraud is particularly attractive in poker, for example. Here the algorithm can constantly calculate the perfect game strategy without being guided by emotions.
How do online casinos protect themselves against AI-supported fraud?
Online casinos are increasingly using so-called behavioral analyses to find out whether the gaming behavior shown is human in nature or not. As soon as unusual patterns are detected, the case is examined individually or the “user” is excluded from the game.
In this context, online casinos are increasingly working with security experts and have a particularly sensitive eye on machine learning or anomaly detection. The aim is, of course, to preserve the integrity of the game in order to give every player equal and, above all, fair chances of winning.
